Policy

The September 2024 – June 2025 academic year includes 35 weeks of instruction. Please see calendar dates. The piano schedule is closely aligned with BC’s school system semester. Make-up lessons begin in July (see below for details). This closes the gap during the summer and reduces the amount of “catch up” the student has to do in September. Summer lessons (beyond the 35 weeks) are also available upon request.

Attendance

Please choose a lesson time that you feel confident in attending continuously. Students are expected to be punctual and prepared to attend their weekly scheduled lesson.

To be fair to all my students, lesson time that is lost due to a late arrival cannot be made up, regardless of the reason for the late arrival. If you miss your lesson without reason, your tuition will not be refunded and there will be no make-up lesson.

Cancellations

If you do need to miss an upcoming lesson, 24-hour notice is required in order to be eligible for make-up lessons (except in cases of illness or family emergencies). I will try to accommodate some circumstances.

If I am unable to teach or need to cancel your lesson, I will schedule a make-up lesson (does not count towards the student’s limit of three make-up lessons) or credit will be given at the end of the academic year.

Make-up Lessons

Make-up lessons are scheduled in July. There is a total of 3 make-up lessons per academic year. Please see “Cancellations” for details.

Illness

Please do not send your children to lessons if they are contagious with a flu or virus. I appreciate your consideration in helping me maintain a healthy studio!

Termination of Lessons

If you decide to terminate lessons, please provide one month’s notice in writing. Your tuition will be adjusted accordingly.

I reserve the right to terminate lessons with a student at any time if these circumstances occur:
– Persistent absences
– Uncooperative attitude, lack of interest, or inappropriate behaviour
– Failure to pay tuition on time
– Failure to follow practice, resulting in lack of progress

Expectations

At the end of each lesson, I will assign homework pieces for the student to work on. Assignments are flagged and practice details will be written in a lesson notebook. Regular, daily practice is the most effective way to progress steadily at the piano. Solidifying new knowledge is important! Do not cram practice before a lesson because that will not work long term. Parents of younger students are encouraged to sit in with their children during the lesson. Parental involvement at is very important for student success. Please review the lesson notes and ensure your child is fulfilling their practice requirements.
