I am a piano instructor, collaborative musician and pianist living and teaching in Burnaby.
I began taking classical piano lessons at the age of 7. In my early teens, I attended the Vancouver Academy of Music, studying with Sheila Hardy. I then continued my advanced studies with Dr. Ronald Morgan, completing my RCM Associate Diploma (ARCT) in Piano Performance in 2010. Throughout my studies, I participated and won awards in music competitions, such as the BCRMTA, Kiwanis, and Richmond Music Festivals. In 2010, I placed first in the finals of the “Grade 10 and Above” category of the Kawai Piano Competition.
My teachers’ tremendous musical knowledge and passion has greatly influenced me to study music in post-secondary and to also become a piano teacher. My music career began while I was working towards my ARCT. I taught piano after school through the Community Schools Team program, a branch within the Vancouver School Board. At that time, I also completed my High Five Certification to design quality programs for healthy child development. During my university years, I taught at a few private music studios throughout Greater Vancouver. Currently, I teach at the community centers in Burnaby and at my private studio, located near Deer Lake/Royal Oak.
After my ARCT, I studied piano pedagogy and obtained my RCM Elementary Specialist Certification in 2012. In 2016, I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Contemporary Music. In 2020, I completed my Intermediate Pedagogy Certification under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Mahlberg.
Aside from piano, my studies in university allowed me to be acquainted with Javanese Gamelan. I was instantly drawn to the beautiful tonalities and the intricate interlocking patterns of the ensemble. Outside of SFU, I performed with Gamelan Alligator Joy, presenting a repertoire of new music at The Western Front in Vancouver. Gamelan Alligator Joy toured to Salt Spring Island in May 2017 for a live show at ArtSpring Theatre.
